WHAT IS DRY EYE SYNDROME?

Dry eye syndrome is a condition where the eyes do not make enough tears, or the tears evaporate too quickly. This can lead to the eyes drying out and becoming inflamed. It is a common condition and becomes more common with age, especially in women. Up to a third of people age 65 or older may have dry eye syndrome. It is more common in those with connective tissue disorders, blepharitis and contact lens wearers.

80% of dry eyes are due to the tears evaporating too quickly. The majority of the time this is due to a problem with the lids and lashes. Blepharitis, which is inflammation of the eyelids, can cause sore, red and swollen eyes. We now have the option of using BlephEx™. This is a fairly new procedure for blepharitis and dry eye symptoms.

BlephEx™ reduces scurf and bacterial debris, the main causes of inflammatory lid disease, and improves the overall health of the eyelid.

We went here under 2 recommendations and were so impressed with everything, all staff were inviting patient and knowledgeable, great choice of frames, no being rushed through and no long waits to speak to someone, they successfully helped me when another optician said there was nothing else that could be done . THE MYAH INSTRUMENT

The MYAH instrument includes a comprehensive suite of dry eye assessment tools to help support patient education and treatment recommendations. Tear film quality can be non-invasively assessed through measuring the speed of tear evaporation (called tear break-up time or TBT) as well as measuring the tear volume along the bottom lid (called tear meniscus height or TMH). Infrared technology also allows the MYAH to image the oil glands along the top and bottom lids, known as Meibomian glands. The percent of gland loss can then be calculated for a selected area.

The results of these assessments can be visualised in a report summarising the tear quality and gland loss as seen below. The results can be used to support treatment recommendations for dry eye disease.
