WHAT IS MYOPIA AND WHY IS IT AN ISSUE?

Myopia, or short-sightedness, is a type of vision loss that causes distant objects to appear blurry. People usually develop myopia in childhood between the ages of 6 and 13. The condition is now very common and is becoming more prevalent, with 50% of the world population predicted to be myopic by 2050.

The good news is there is a range of products designed to manage myopia and slow down its progression over time. We offer contact lenses for myopia control and spectacle lenses to suit different requirements.

TESTIMONIALS

Needed some lenses fitting in some new glasses and this was the only shop in Lincoln that would take it on. Excellent service and work, highly recommended

MYOPIA CAUSES AND TREATMENT FOR CHILDREN

So could your child be myopic? How do I know? In the videos below, we explain what myopia is, the signs to look for to spot it and the causes behind it. We also cover the impacts on children and the options we have to help correct and slow the problem.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING MYOPIA MANAGEMENT APPOINTMENTS

Your appointment is designed to give us time to assess prescription changes, discuss visual habits, and explain the options in plain English so you can select appropriate frames if needed. We look at factors such as how quickly short sight is progressing and how your child uses their eyes for reading, screens, and distance vision.

Our longer appointment style means you are not rushed through important decisions or left with unanswered questions. At Dixons Opticians we can then recommend the most suitable next step and arrange regular reviews to monitor progress properly. That steady follow-up matters because myopia management works best when changes are tracked consistently over time.

MYOPIA CONTROL AND MANAGEMENT PROGRAMMES

SO WHAT IS THE ANSWER?

There are many options to slow down myopia-causing things, but research shows the younger you start on a myopia management programme, the better the chance of success.

Treatments range from lifestyle changes to different types of contact lenses or spectacle lenses. The optometrist will discuss all the options available at your appointment and would recommend the best one to suit the patient.
